EXHIBITION

On Thursday 5 September the bibliographic exhibition ‘María Jesús Alvarado. Feminist networks of a Peruvian intellectual’ was inaugurated in our Cultural Centre.

An educator, intellectual and activist, María Jesús Alvarado is considered one of the first feminist theorists in Peru. Her commitment to the social and political context of the 20^th century led her to take up the demand and recognition of the rights of women, children, the workers’ movement and farmer communities. Along the way, she generated national and international networks of activism and reflection that became associations, organisations and civic-feminist groups that were fundamental in obtaining rights for women during the 20^th century.

The curatorship – by Karen Bernedo – attempts to understand the collaborative networks in which María Jesús Alvarado participated in order to understand the synergy of an interdisciplinary women’s movement that led the way in the battles for equality that continue to this day.

CONVERSATION

In the framework of the bibliographic exhibition, a discussion took place with the participation of Margarita Zegarra, Diana Miloslavich and Karen Bernedo.

Margarita Zegarra is a historian from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and holds a Master’s degree in History from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. She has been director of the Centro de Documentación sobre la Mujer (Women’s Documentation Centre) (Cendoc – Mujer). She currently teaches at the Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola. Among her various research projects is the book María Jesús Alvarado. The construction of a feminist intellectual in Lima 1878-1971 (2016).

Diana Miloslavich studied literature at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. She holds a PhD in social sciences, specialising in history, and a Master’s degree in Peruvian and Latin American literature from the same university. She currently coordinates the Political Participation and Decentralisation Programme at the Flora Tristán Centre. She has published “María Elena Moyano en Busca de Una Esperanza” (1992) and “Literatura de Mujeres. Una mirada desde el feminism” (2012).

Karen Bernedo is a social communicator and documentary filmmaker, with a Master’s degree in visual anthropology and a postgraduate diploma in Gender Studies from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. She was responsible for the direction of the documentaries “Las otras memorias” and “Arte y violencia política”. She teaches at the Universidad Científica del Sur and is a consultant for human rights and women’s rights organisations. She is co-founder of the Asociación Cultural Museo Itinerante Arte por la Memoria (Itinerant Museum Art for Memory Cultural Association).
