Escenas del naufragio (Scenes from the Shipwreck)
Alexis García

On Tuesday, April 14, at 12:00 noon, the exhibition ESCENAS DEL NAUFRAGIO (SCENES FROM THE SHIPWRECK), by artist Alexis García, curated by Jorge Villacorta, will open at the Inca Garcilaso Cultural Center of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

For the curator, the exhibition “throws into the air and scatters the artist’s dark humor as well as the anguish of his sleepless nights. It also offers a touch of tenderness”. He believes that García “reserves his darkest humor for his performances, documented in smaller-format images. These images possess diverse textures, lent to them by the anecdotes that form his personal history.

They are full of settling accounts with friends, contemporaries, and enemies, of course. His main antagonist, however, is that young man in his memory, barely out of adolescence, who left Havana at 22 years old, and who today is at odds with the deluded witness of a relentless shipwreck”.

Alexis García Núñez, born in Cuba, is an artist and poet residing in Lima, where he has lived for more than half of his life. He is a member of the National Council of Visual Arts of Cuba and the Experimental Graphic Workshop of Havana, where he trained as a printmaker; he also volunteered at the René Portocarrero Serigraphy and Mixed Media Workshop (Taller de Serigrafía y Técnicas Mixtas René Portocarrero). He has participated in numerous individual and group exhibitions, including those held at the Luis Miró Quesada Garland Gallery (2001), the Contemporary Art Gallery of the Pedro de Osma Museum (Lima, 2011), and the Orígenes Gallery of the Great Havana Theater. He participated in the collective project “Cubo Blanco Flexi-Time” with the performance “Aplastante” (2004) and curated four major exhibitions commemorating the 55th anniversary of the Experimental Graphic Workshop of Havana, at the casa-museo Marqués de Arcos, Palacio Lombillo, Museo Colonial, and the Experimental Workshop itself (2015). He is the author of the poetry collection “El Mar en Mí” (Lancom) (“The Sea Within Me”).

The exhibition can be visited until 31 May; from Tuesday to Friday, from 10 am to 8 pm; Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, from 10 am to 6 pm. Free admission.
