On Wednesday, April 9 at 12:00 p.m., the bibliographic exhibition “Inexhaustible Figure: The Literary Career of María Wiesse” will open at the Inca Garcilaso Cultural Centre of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Jr. Ucayali 391, Lima).

María Jesús Wiesse Romero (1894–1964) is the most prolific Peruvian writer of the first half of the 20th century. With great sensitivity toward the arts and a critical perspective on the place of women and children in society, Wiesse emerged as a key figure during a period of political, economic, and cultural transformation. A self-taught intellectual whose work has been increasingly recognized in recent years, she expressed her creative curiosity across various literary genres and subgenres through more than thirty publications over five decades. Her writing encompassed poetry, theatre, short stories, novels, chronicles, essays, and biographies.

Curated by Mónica Delgado, the exhibition highlights María Wiesse’s literary path over fifty years, revealing the profile of a woman passionate about her creative stance and committed to an educational ideal. Admission is free.

Discussion Panel

As part of the bio-bibliographic exhibition, a discussion panel will be held on the same Wednesday, April 9, at 12:30 p.m., with the participation of Alhelí Málaga, Ricardo Wiesse, and Mónica Delgado.

Alhelí Málaga holds a Master’s degree in Publishing from the Jagiellonian University (Poland). She previously earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos and in Philosophy from the Universidad Jesuita Ignatianum, as well as a Humanities diploma from the Universidad Antonio Ruiz de Montoya. Her areas of interest include translation theory, multilingualism, migration, sociology of religion, and critical disability studies.

Ricardo Wiesse, visual artist, studied Humanities and Painting at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, and Engraving at Atelier 17 in Paris and the Slade School of Fine Arts in London. He has taught at various art schools and is the author of the ceramic mural on the Vía Expresa in Lima. He has received several national painting awards and exhibited in the most important galleries in Lima and in several international venues. His published works include Wiesse, pinturas y otros ensayos (Wiesse, Paintings and Other Essays) 2005, Plumas del Antisuyo: Vilcabamba, raíz y piedra (Feathers of the Antisuyo: Vilcabamba, Root and Stone) 2009, Letra y música de María Wiesse (Lyrics and Music of María Wiesse 2014, among others.

Mónica Delgado, social communicator, researcher, and film critic, is a professor at the School of Social Communication of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. She holds a Master’s degree in Literature with a mention in Cultural Studies and is a Ph.D. candidate in Art History at the same university. She is director of Desistfilm magazine and published María Wiesse in Amauta: The Origins of Film Criticism in Peru in 2020. She has taught courses and workshops on film criticism and experimental cinema.
