The exhibition ‘Mural painting of the southern Andes’, curated by Luis Eduardo Wuffarden and Ricardo Kusunoki, presents four temples of the Andean South – Andahuaylillas, Huaro, Canincunca and Marcapata – as emblematic cases of one of the most representative facets in the history of Peruvian colonial art. These are indigenous parishes of ancient foundation that form part of the Andean baroque route and exemplify like few others the richness of local muralism and its fascinating vitality through the centuries.

The exhibition is held in memory of and in homage to Pablo Macera Dall’Orso (1929-2020), a brilliant Peruvian historian who devoted a large part of his career as a researcher to the modern revaluation of mural painting. His founding essays, published in the 1970s and 1980s, succeeded in imposing a new perspective and so positioning this pictorial production, which had been relegated until then, as one of the fundamental axes of Peruvian art.

Thanks to the support of the Asociación de Servicios Empresariales Pedro Arrupe-SEMPA-Ruta del Barroco, the exhibition will feature a 360-degree video projection of the interior of the aforementioned temples. It will also include photographs of the mural paintings and some representative pieces.
