\u2018Adelina and Amador\u2019 is an exhibition of documentary photography comprising images that the artist Jeannine Ferrand recorded 44 years ago in the village of\u00a0El Carmen<\/em>, in\u00a0Chincha<\/em>. The exhibition, which alludes to the late Amador Ballumbrosio and his wife Adelina, is now being presented for the first time.<\/p>\n

\u2018I arrived in\u00a0El Carmen<\/em>\u00a0in 1980 looking for the Ballumbrosio family. The family’s talent was already known at that time, but I didn’t know how a woman from Lima carrying a five-year-old boy and a camera could be received. I didn’t have a project in mind, but such was the affection of that family that I soon felt completely comfortable to take as many photos as I wanted. In fact, that was the first time I was able to do it with such ease; Adelina’s generosity allayed all my fears. She and Amador had 15 children, but they still accommodated us,\u2019 says the artist.<\/p>\n

The exhibition has been curated by the renowned filmmaker and visual artist Mario Acha, who writes the following: \u2018Jeannine Ferrand’s sharp and transparent gaze is a good example of a way of taking photographs, which directs the gaze towards the complex reality that surrounds us and which forces us to relate to each other. Without technical artifices or natural ambient light, she captures scenes that show the intimate history of a family with inherited ancient customs and still markedly rural behaviour\u2019.<\/p>\n

Mario Acha adds that in the photographs of the exhibition one can see \u2018the patriarch Amador Ballumbrosio (1933-2009), a mason by trade and a notable violinist, cajon player and dancer (today a legend of Afro-Peruvian music), surrounded by his wife Adelina, children and grandchildren, in the intimacy of the family. The freshness of these uninhibited testimonial scenes, as well as the intimate portraits, are testimony loaded with nostalgia and human transcendence. Amador and Adelina’s house lives on in these photographs\u2019.<\/p>\n

Jeannine Ferrand (Lima, 1954) is a freelance photographer with more than 45 years of experience in the field of documentary and artistic photography. She studied anthropology at the Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica del Per\u00fa<\/em> and has attended photography and screen-printing workshops in Lima and Barcelona. In Ibiza, she set up a laboratory where she worked as a photographer between 1976 and 1980. On her return, she opened up a studio in Lima and then, in 1993, she moved to Costa Rica, where she worked for ten years in her own studio.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
